Pride

 Websters 1828 Dictionary:

Inordinate self-esteem; an unreasonable conceit of one's own superiority in talents, beauty, wealth, accomplishments, rank or elevation in office, which manifests itself in lofty airs, distance, reserve, and often in contempt of others. Insolence; rude treatment of others; insolent exultation.Generous elation of heart; a noble self-esteem springing from a consciousness of worth.

Quotes:

“A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“He that is proud eats up himself: pride is his own glass, his own trumpet, his own chronicle.” ― William Shakespeare

“The proud wish God would agree with them. They are not interested in changing their opinions to agree with God's.” ― Ezra Taft Benson

“Humility and pride will forever battle whenever or wherever love is concerned.” ― Jeremy Aldana

Scriptures:

Alma 38:11 See that ye are not lifted up unto pride; yea, see that ye do not boast in your own wisdom, nor of your much strength.

Proverbs 13:10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

D&C 23:1 Behold, I speak unto you, Oliver, a few words. Behold, thou are blessed, and art under no condemnation. But beware of pride, lest thou shouldst enter into temptation.

Poem:

Why does it have to be about who is right or wrong?

He lets his pride get the best of him.

Leaving her feel miserable that she has to give in,

Every single time.

That his opinions of everything is correct,

Because only his logic is the on that makes sense.

-C. Winters

Synonyms:

Delight, dignity, ego, happiness, honor, joy, pleasure, satisfaction, self-confidence, self-respect, egoism, egotism, face, gratification, repletion, self-love.

Personal Definition:

In order to understand humility, we must first learn to experience pride. Pride is placing your own needs and wants above everything else. In order to overcome pride we must serve and be patient. If we don't do this then pride can in both a literal and a figurative sense, cause our own destruction. Pride is viewing yourself above the others around you. However, couldn't pride be a good thing? Like taking pride in your work, or being prideful in the Lord? I think pride is usually a bad thing, it is viewed as a wrong that can be done. People who are prideful are boastful and rude, those who are humble are generally more enjoyable to be around.

Principles

Oxford English Dictionary:

To ground (a person) in the principles or elements of a subject; to impress with principles of action; to instruct, teach, school, train.

Quotes:

"I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death." -Leonardo da Vinci

"There are three constants in life... change, choice and principles." -Stephen Covey

"A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both." -Dwight D. Eisenhower

I have seen how the doctrine and gospel principles are guiding more and more members. -Walter González

Scriptures:

Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God

D&C 138:4
That through his atonement, and by obedience to the principles of the gospel, mankind might be saved.

My Thoughts:

Principles can be true, false or half and half. As Saints of the Church or Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints we try to look for true principles. True principles are based off of true doctrine. We should apply principles in our daily lives!!
