Silence

  • Websters 1828 Dictionary
    •  In a general sense, stillness, or entire absence of sound or noise; as the silence of midnight.
      • Silence is stillness, and it is without noise. The silence of midnight is something you can envision in your head as well as something you can experience.
      • Stillness:  hush, serenity, and tranquility.  Noise: blast or commotion.
    •  Stillness; calmness; quiet; cessation of rage, agitation or tumult; as the elements reduced to silence
      • Once again, stillness along with calmness and quiet. Loudness is reduced to silence.
      • Calmness: composure and patience. Quiet: muted or soft. Reduced: decreased, diminished or shortened.
  • Quotes
    • "We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.
      • Mother Teresa
      • God has blessed us with this beautiful earth that is full of peace and silence. If we
    •   "As we attend the temple, there can come to us a dimension of spirituality and a feeling of peace."
  •  Scriptures
    •  For so great was the astonishment of the people that they did cease lamenting and howling for the loss of their kindred which had been slain; therefore there was silence in all the land for the space of many hours.
      • 3 Nephi 10:2
      • Many times before Christ comes or talks to the people there is a great silence. I believe that before we talk to God through prayer or read the scriptures for answers that we should sit in silence for just a minute and calm ourselves and listen.
  • My Personal Definition
    • Silence is being quiet. Being quiet does not mean all around us is quiet. When something is silent we can feel the quiet around us, there is no noise.
    • Silence bring peace. Before a class or test or study time I like to have some silent time to bring peace into the room. There is already so much contention and noise in the world that we do not need to add to it with noise in our homes and relationships. Often times the best way to bring peace is to be silent.
    • Listening is a big part of silence. There is a time to talk and a time to listen. When everyone is talking at once the noise only grows and the contention grows and the frustration grows. You cannot seek to understand if you insist on talking.

Stewardship

Dictionary:

Stewardship is an ethic that embodies the responsible planning and management of resources.

Scriptures:

D&C 64:40 "If they are not faithful in their stewardship's shall be condemned, and others shall be planted in their stead."

D&C 70:4 "And an account of this stewardship will I require of them in the day of judgment."

D&C 70:8-9 "And the benefits shall be consecrated unto the inhabitants of Zion, and unto their generations, inasmuch as they become heirs according to the laws of the kingdom."
"Behold, this is what the Lord requires of every man in his stewardship, even as I, the Lord, have appointed or shall hereafter appoint unto any man."

Quotes:

A leader must be a good listener. He must be willing to take counsel. He must show a genuine concern and love for those under his stewardship.
-James E. Faust

“Clearly, those of us who have been entrusted with precious children have been given a sacred, noble stewardship, for we are the ones God has appointed to encircle today’s children with love and the fire of faith and an understanding of who they are”
-M Russel Ballard

My Thoughts:

We are given blessings in different forms (talents, people, objects, doctrines, etc) we have stewardship over these objects. Stewardship means that we need to take care of it, learn about it, understand it, and share it with others.

 Quotes:

-Robert Delaunay

"Nearly 200 years ago William Wordsworth wrote that “the world is too much with us.” What on earth would he say about the encroachments pressing in on your souls and sensibilities today? In addressing some of these problems facing you, we are mindful that an absolute multitude of youth are faithfully living the gospel and standing resolutely before the Lord."

Sanctified

Webster's 1828 Dictionary:

1. Made holy; consecrated; set apart for sacred services.
2. Affectedly holy.

Scriptures:

Genisis 2:1-3 "And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."

Numbers 7:1 "And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them;

D&C 88:35 " 35 That which breaketh a law, and abideth not by law, but seeketh to become a law unto itself, and willeth to abide in sin, and altogether abideth in sin, cannot be sanctified by law, neither by mercy, justice, nor judgment. Therefore, they must remain filthy still."

Quotes:

He who is completely sanctified, or cleansed from all sin, and dies in this state,
is fit for glory. -Adam Clarke

We are also to be a sanctified instrument as well. Partly because of what we are to do but more importantly because of what we are to be, the prophets and apostles tell us to “flee … youthful lusts” and “call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” They tell us to be clean. -Jeffrey R Holland

Repenting and coming unto Christ through the covenants and ordinances of salvation are prerequisite to and a preparation for being sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost and standing spotless before God at the last day. -David A Bednar

My thoughts:

To be sanctified is to be holy, it is to be blessed by God. To be completely clean.

Service

Dictionary:

The action of helping or doing work for someone.

Quotes:

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
-Mahatma Gandhi-

-Rabindranath Tagore-

Show me your hands. Do they have scars from giving? Show me your feet. Are they wounded in service? Show me your heart. Have you left a place for divine love?

Our Savior teaches us to follow Him by making the sacrifices necessary to lose ourselves in unselfish service to others. If we do, He promises us eternal life, “the greatest of all the gifts of God”
-Dallin H Oaks-

Scriptures:

Mosiah 2:16-17
Behold, I say unto you that because I said unto you that I had spent my days in your service, I do not desire to boast, for I have only been in the service of God.
And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.

My thoughts:

Service is giving of yourself, your time, your effort, your money, and your love.

"To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders."
-Lao Tzu
For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.
-John F. Kennedy

LDS/Scriptures:

Peace, Be Still

I woke up in the middle of the night with the heaviest heart I’d ever had. The pain was suffocating me. I fell to my knees and sobbed a prayer to my Heavenly Father. All my life I had been taught about the Atonement and Jesus Christ’s miraculous healing power. Now my faith was being tested. Did I really believe? I asked my Father in Heaven to please heal my heart. The pain was too much for me to deal with alone.
Then a feeling of peace, comfort, and love swept over my entire body. I felt as though God had wrapped His arms around me and was protecting me from the intense pain I had felt. I still missed my brother, but I was able to see with different eyes. There was so much for me to learn from this experience.

Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea
Or demons or men or whatever it be,
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean and earth and skies.
They all shall sweetly obey thy will:
Peace, be still.
“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)

Job 37: 14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

My Thoughts:

To be still is to be peaceful, to have the spirit with you and to be understanding to others. Also to be still you must be willing to step out of your comfort zone and do things without complaint.
For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.
